Biography
Dr. Eduardo Fernandes is part of the DHR Health Transplant Institute, specializing in kidney and liver transplantation. Dr. Fernandes joins the institute with extensive experience in transplant surgery, further enhancing the hospital system’s ability to provide exceptional care to the South Texas community.
Dr. Fernandes completed his medical education in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He then pursued residency training in general surgery at Rio de Janeiro Adventist Hospital. His passion for transplantation led him to complete several fellowships, including advanced training in Liver and Small Bowel Transplantation at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Additionally, he trained in Liver Surgery and Transplantation at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan, and in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Liver Transplantation at Queen Elizabeth Hospital at Hong Kong University. In addition, he completed master thesis in abdominal surgery at Rio de Janeiro Federal University as well as a PhD thesis in liver transplantation at Rio de Janeiro State University. He had several peer-reviewed publications in pancreatic cancer surgery, liver tumor resection and liver transplantation. He is often invited to speak at several international meetings. So far he operated over 2000 liver transplants and abdominal cancer surgeries. Dr. Fernandes is fluent in both English and Portuguese.
