Edinburg, TX—In the state of Texas, over 11% of adults have diabetes, while another 7.5% have pre-diabetes. More staggering, over the past 20 years the percentage of people in the United States with diabetes has doubled. As this disease continues to affect more people throughout the nation, DHR Health aims to educate the local community about diabetes prevention or management for those already diagnosed.
According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, the prevalence of diabetes in South Texas is a shocking 15.15%, which is significantly higher than the state of Texas rate of 11.4%. At DHR Health Diabetes and Endocrinology Institute we are leading the battle to conquer diabetes in all its forms through cutting-edge research and innovative approaches to patient care and education. This month we ask everyone affected by diabetes—whether that means people living with diabetes, caregivers, or those who are at risk of developing diabetes—to put on their capes and share how they’re taking a stand.
As part of this year’s American Diabetes Month theme – Everyday Reality – we focus on what it truly means to live with this condition. We know that diabetes can greatly impact many daily decisions including what meals to eat, what physical activity to do, or when to check blood glucose discreetly. The goal of this American Diabetes Month is to create urgency about diabetes and to help educate people about how they can manage their diabetes, while also providing accurate information about common myths and misunderstandings.
During November, DHR Health encourages those who might be at a higher risk for diabetes, for example if you have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, or are a woman with a history of gestational diabetes, to visit the DHR Health Diabetes and Endocrinology Institute for a screening. If you have pre-diabetes, the nutritionists and educators will work with you to create the best plan possible to delay and ultimately prevent diabetes.
