Dear Prospective Gastroenterology Fellow,
It is my pleasure, as Program Director of the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at DHR Health, affiliated with the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, to warmly welcome you and introduce our exciting three-year general gastroenterology fellowship.
We are proud to launch this ACGME-approved training program in the Rio Grande Valley, addressing the profound need for expert digestive disease care in our community. As the only gastroenterology fellowship in the region, we will train three fellows per year starting July 2026, preparing you to deliver exceptional, high-impact care.
DHR Health is one of the largest physician-owned hospital systems in the United States, founded by local physicians to bridge healthcare access gaps for over 1.5 million residents in South Texas. Our physician-led model fosters innovation, autonomy, and patient-centered excellence across several hospitals, more than 70 facilities, and a full range of specialties—supported by state-of-the-art technology and collaborative teams.
A standout feature of our program is that fellows gain high-volume procedural training in a supportive environment under the guidance of highly experienced, qualified and dedicated faculty building strong foundations in general GI, hepatology, IBD, motility, nutrition, and more—equipping you for board certification, independent practice, or future advanced endoscopy if desired.
Our partnership with the University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine enhances the experience through academic resources, research via the DHR Health Institute for Research and Development, and opportunities for scholarly activity. Fellows train amid diverse pathology, high case volumes, and an underserved population, allowing meaningful contributions to community health.
We seek dedicated, passionate candidates eager to thrive in a dynamic, mentorship-rich setting that prioritizes education, quality improvement, and balanced professional growth.
If you are excited to develop exceptional clinical and procedural skills in this distinctive environment, we invite you to apply and become part of shaping the future of gastroenterology in the Rio Grande Valley.
We look forward to reviewing your application and the possibility of welcoming you to our program.
Warm regards,
Asif Zamir, MD, FACG,AGAF,FACP
