    Edinburg, TX — As the time of year that many sportsmen transition from the water to the brush for hunting season in South Texas, it is important to be aware of the hidden dangers that outdoor activities present and how to manage them should an accident happen. Snake and spider bites, gunshot wounds, heat related illness, drowning, and other emergent issues can arise when out in the South Texas brush country. On Saturday, October 27, 2018 DHR Health will host the 5th Annual Brush Country Medicine and Survival Conference to educate and enlighten the medical community, first responders, and the general public about these potential hazards.

    Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in women. As many as one in every eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in her life and approximately 30% of all newly diagnosed cancers found in women will be breast cancer. Of all the women diagnosed with breast cancer, 85% had no previous family history of the disease. However, when caught early (stage 0 – stage 1), breast cancer has a near 100% survival rate. Join DHR Health in raising breast cancer awareness this month as we encourage women to perform self-exams and receive an annual screening mammogram. Our goal is to increase awareness by hosting several events and fundraisers throughout the month, and the public is invited to participate!
    DHR Health (DHR) is proud to support Capable Kids Foundation by donating $10,000 to the iAM Society. Capable Kids Foundation is non-profit organization that aims to identify and address social and physical needs for individuals with disabilities in the RGV area. They are dedicated to encouraging children with disabilities to participate in events and activities that aim to improve quality of life.
    DHR Health and the DHR Health Therapy Institute celebrate Cardiac Rehabilitation Week February 11-17, 2018. Cardiac Rehabilitation Week recognizes the crucial role of cardiac rehabilitation in reducing the potentially devastating effects of heart disease and improving quality of life for patients and their families.
    Every 2 minutes a child is diagnosed with childhood cancer. Now the number one cause of death by disease in children five or older, childhood cancer is on the rise in the United States. To battle this devastating disease that affects more than 300,000 children worldwide each year, and increase awareness within our community, DHR Health (DHR) is participating in Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the month of September DHR will host events to support local children and families that have been affected by childhood cancer and to raise funds for children in the Rio Grande Valley who are currently battling the disease.

    DHR Health (DHR) is pleased to announce its 13th Annual “Fishing for Hope” Tournament, which will be held Saturday, August 25, 2018 at Louie’s Backyard on South Padre Island, Texas. Now one of the largest non-profit fishing tournaments on the Texas coast, “Fishing for Hope” is a family-friendly and fun event for people of all ages. This year’s tournament will feature a live concert, dinner, the legendary stars auction, and much more! All proceeds from “Fishing for Hope” will once again benefit the Hope Family Health Center.

    The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance (WHR) is excited to announce the arrival of the first baby in 2018! Delivered by Dr. Jimmi Rios, baby Ethan Garcia entered the world on January 1, 2018 at 12:15 AM. Born to Brian and Mariah Garcia of Mission, TX, Ethan weighed in at 5 pounds 14 ounces and is 19 inches long.
    For young patients at DHR Health, a small act of kindness ensures that children are comfortable in what can be a very scary situation. In December 2017, DHR received a donation of teddy bears to give to children in the emergency room. The bears provide comfort for a child whose family member is sick or injured, and help ease a little one’s fear and discomfort during what is usually an unhappy visit to the hospital. The donation program, started by Paula Owen of the Rio Grande Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, continues to provide stuffed animals for children in the hospital.
    The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine and DHR Health on Friday, June 15, graduated the inaugural classes of their Family Medicine and Internal Medicine residency programs. 
    DHR Health (DHR) and the Renaissance Cares Foundation, Inc. (RCF) are partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB), Texas Veterans Commission and other local and state agencies to host the “Veterans Health, Education, and Benefits Fair” on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 9:00 AM until 1:00 PM.  The fair will take place at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance, located at 118 Paseo del Prado (McColl Road and Alberta), Edinburg, TX, 78593. Veterans, spouses and dependents are welcome to attend this event, free of charge.
    DHR Health is proud to contribute $2,500 to the “VINOS!” benefit fundraiser hosted by the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo County. Dedicated to promoting awareness about child abuse and neglect, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hidalgo County (CACHC) supports the prevention of child abuse through community education and the effective prosecution of those who perpetrate crimes against children. They also provide services such as child forensic interviews, crisis intervention, mental health services, and more.
    DHR Health (DHR) is proud to announce that in recognition of its quality, experience, and excellence in the delivery of kidney transplant medical services, it is now officially certified as an Adult Kidney Transplant Program by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). CMS certification is the highest quality indicator for a transplant program, and DHR is the only health system south of San Antonio to receive this seal of approval. This certification will greatly expand access to life-saving kidney transplants for many patients in the Rio Grande Valley who are Medicare beneficiaries and suffering from end-stage kidney failure.
    DHR Health is honored to recognize two of its physicians for receiving a distinguished award from the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA). Dr. Gerardo Lopez-Mena, VP of Medical Affairs at DHR Health, and Dr. Michael Martinez, a bariatric surgeon at the DHR Health Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, both received the Young Physician of the Year Award from NHMA.
    DHR Health Women’s Hospital is proud to be recognized by nonprofit GenCure, a subsidiary of BioBridge Global, for its outstanding performance in educating and collecting cord blood from donors in the Rio Grande Valley. Susan Smith, Grief Support and Life Legacies Manager of GenCure in San Antonio, Texas presented the team at DHR Health’s Women’s Hospital with a plaque recognizing the hospital staff for their outstanding cord blood collection program. Cord blood donations collected from DHR Health Women’s Hospital have been shipped to transplant centers around the world, including some in the United States, Chile, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy and Belgium.
    DHR Health (DHR)  is excited to announce that it will host the 10th Annual Rio Grande Valley “Brave the Shave for Kids with Cancer” event on February 17, 2018. Held at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance from 1:00 – 4:00 PM, “Brave the Shave” is the St. Baldrick’s Foundation signature head-shaving event where more than 100 people are expected to shave their heads in a show of solidarity with kids with cancer to raise money for lifesaving research. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-powered organization dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research.
    The Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) is holding its 22nd Annual Golf Cup Tournament on March 3, 2018 at the Palm View Golf Course. As it has for the past 5 years, DHR Health (DHR) will be the Presenting Sponsor for the Tournament, contributing $50,000 to scholarship funding for students in the Rio Grande Valley.
