At a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for June 22, 2006 at 10:00 a.m., Doctors Hospital at Renaissance CEO, Dr. Lawrence Gelman will announce the name and vision for a new hospital dedicated to all stages of women’s health. The new hospital will be built at the corner of Owassa and McColl in Edinburg across from DHR’s main campus.
The facility will be approximately 200,000 square feet and is slated to open in the Spring of 2008. The new hospital dedicated to women will provide 24 labor and delivery suites, 24 post surgical patient suites, 48 post partum suites, a 36 bed new born nursery, a 28 bed neo-natal Intensive Care Unit, 5 surgical suites and 14 medical beds. All patient suites will be private as well as comforting, warm, and welcoming to patients and their families. The new hospital will provide the community with an optimal environment to become the premier women’s facility in South Texas.
This facility will be the only hospital dedicated exclusively to women’s healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley. This $65 million dollar project will be a huge investment in the community’s health and will have the capability of 8,000 deliveries per year.
In addition to the 1,700 current employees, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance will hire an additional 1,000 staff members to be a part of the new hospital. DHR will bring the most state-of-the-art technology coupled with the expertise and commitment of over 40 local obstetricians and gynecologists.
Edinburg Mayor Joe Ochoa and McAllen Mayor Richard Cortez will make comments during the groundbreaking ceremony to guests, including, physicians, investors, community and business leaders and other interested citizens.

The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance Celebrates First Delivery in Grand Fashion
The first baby delivered at the Women’s Hospital at Renaissance was born on Monday, October 1, 2007 at 3:14 PM. A boy, Sebastian J. Izaguirre, son of Jose and Mayra Izaguirre from Edinburg, Texas, weighed 7 pounds, and measured 20.5 inches long. Mother and son are doing well according to Obstetrician, Dr. Molina.
“This modern state-of-the-art facility is the Valley’s only hospital dedicated exclusively to women’s healthcare needs,” says Marissa Castañeda, DHR Chief Operations Officer. “We are elated to join with over forty-five obstetric and gynecological physicians in providing the highest quality care to women in South Texas.”
In recognition of being the first baby born at The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance, Baby Izaguirre received a $10,000 savings bond from Lone Star National Bank and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. HEB Food Stores was present during the formal presentation to the community and will be providing a supply of diapers and wipes for the first year to the Izaguirre family.
